Character Education

Character Education at Brighouse High School

‘Character allows us to flourish as individuals, and as a wider society. This is why the development of character, as well as achieving academic attainment, should be the purpose of education’

(Association for Character Education).

As a School of Character, we develop the whole person, developing students’ skills, character and values alongside their academic learning. The school emphasises the importance of Respect, Kindness and Success. Students learn how to become a citizen in the school community and in wider society. Pupils are exposed to different beliefs and views, with an emphasis on understanding and tolerance. The personal development curriculum, Learning 4 Life (L4L), is an important part of our curriculum.

Careers, work based learning, and work experience at Key Stages 4 and 5, provide links with the local community. Pupils receive well-planned careers advice. There are structured opportunities for pupils to explore the choices they have at key points in their education. In the Sixth Form, pupils are given detailed support on further study or employment opportunities. Those pupils wishing to seek employment have daily contact with the careers adviser. The school is proud of the fact that every pupil identified as having SEND goes into further education or employment when they leave Year 11. Trips and expeditions are a strong feature of life at Brighouse High School. Over a 100 students at Key Stage 4 participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The school is proud of the variety of trips and visits on offer including the Year 7 trip to the Lake District, football tours to Spain, History trips to the Battlefields and Berlin. These are just a few of trips on offer to our students.

We are proud to offer a broad, balanced, relevant, differentiated and fully inclusive curriculum for all students. The achievements of our students speak for themselves, and we enjoy encouraging and supporting them on their journey to be independent, successful adults with character and values at the heart of everything we do.
